About the TV Ratings and V-Chip
Internal V-Chip—This device is built into the majority of new television sets. It electronically reads television-programming ratings and allows parents to block programs they believe are unsuitable for their children. Digital Cable TV Boxes—All digital cable boxes used by Cablevision of Marion County have the capability of establishing parental controls. You as the parent
can determine which “ratings” you will allow your child to view. The TV Parental Guidelines Monitoring Board is comprised of a broad range of television industry experts charged with making sure there is uniformity and consistency in applying the Parental Guidelines. The Board examines programs with ratings that may have been inappropriate to ensure the accuracy of the Guidelines. Individuals can
contact the Board via mail, phone or E-mail to voice complaints. Individuals can contact the Board via mail, phone or e-mail to voice complaints.

With an increasing number of TV channels and programs coming into our homes daily, it can be hard for parents to monitor what their children are watching. Therefore, the television industry designed a TV ratings system to give parents more information about the content and age-appropriateness of TV programs. These ratings, called the TV Parental Guidelines, are modeled after the familiar movie ratings which parents have known and valued for nearly 30 years. They are designed to be simple to use, easy to understand, and handy to find. The Guidelines apply to all television programs including those directed specifically to young children. (Sports and news shows will
not carry the Guidelines.)
Currently two popular electronic methods of control exist. They are the Internal V-Chip and the Digital Cable TV Box.
